In 1856, slave Samuel Woodward and his family flee their captive plantation run by Monroe near Richmond, Virginia. Whilst they’re aided by an elusive network of ordinary God-fearing folk known as the Underground Railroad, they’re pursued relentlessly by the infamous slave-hunter Plimpton on their road to freedom in Canada. 100 years earlier, Samuel’s great-grandfather’s life is in the hands of slave captain John Newton, who sails from Africa with a cargo of slaves, bound for America. The voyage transforms Newton’s life, and his legacy of liberation inspires not only Samuel on his own journey to freedom, but also generations to follow. Based on a true story.
